Before the war, my family lived in MacKenzie Road near the present day Istana( formerly known as Government House). Life was peaceful and happy then. My notion of war was very vague. Just before the outbreak of the Pacific War, though we heard news that the situation was turning critical, we were not unduly worried about the safety of our country. We felt that as long as Great Britain's bombers, cannons and warships were here to protect us, Singapore would be safe. Anyway, part of Japanese troops were still far away in Annam( present-day Vietnam ) and there was no way they could reach Singapore so soon.Adapted from The Prince of Peace, compiled and edited by Foong Choon Han
I almost
forgot. During the occupation, many victims were tortured badly. I was one of
the most luckiest survivor who does not got picked up to be the victim. I was
told to learn, speak and bow upon them whenever I meet them. It was a torture
years that I experienced. They would not give any MERCY upon the people and
they will just follow the circumstances of war. The prisoners of war were
forced to do labour and were not given enough food to eat, which resulted in
starvation, illness for the prisoners and they ended up to death. The rules
that was given by the Japanese were also very strict and they have have harsh
punishments if somebody disobeyed them. Most of the tortures that I've seen
were the worse punishments. Most of the people were punish to death as the
picture shown above.
